Professional career

Medical and Surgical degree from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. He completed specialty training in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at the Hôpital de la Pitié-Salpêtrière in Paris, France (1988-1993).

Between 1993 and 1996, he completed a fellowship in the Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at the University of Arizona (Tucson, USA), where he served as chief resident during the 1994-1995 academic year. At that institution, in addition to his work as a cardiovascular surgeon, he further developed his expertise in heart transplantation and circulatory support.

He joined the Clínica Universidad de Navarra in 1996. Fellow of the European Board of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons (FEBTS) since 2000.

Director of the Department of Cardiac Surgery and of the heart transplantation program at the Clínica Universidad de Navarra.

AREAS OF INTEREST

Minimally invasive cardiac surgery using various techniques (HeartPort, off-pump coronary surgery).

In the field of heart transplantation, he has participated in multiple international studies and is actively involved in mechanical circulatory support programs as temporary cardiac replacement therapy (recovery or bridge to transplant) or as definitive therapy.

He has published more than 170 articles in national and international journals.

He has contributed to 21 book chapters.

He has presented more than 200 papers at specialty conferences.
