Liver diseases Research

We advance in the research of the main diseases affecting the liver to develop innovative strategies to reduce their great social and health impact.

Liver disease is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the Western world, as well as in emerging economies. In the European Union alone, about 29 million people suffer from chronic liver disease, according to data from the World Health Organization (WHO).

At the Cima Universidad de Navarra, we conduct research into the origin and causes of the development of different pathologies that affect the liver, with special interest in developing effective treatments that respond to current needs. Aware of the impact they have on the population and, consequently, on health care costs, Cima's research focuses mainly on the study of liver tumors (hepatocarcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma), steatosis and acute intermittent porphyria.

We research in close collaboration with doctors from the Clínica Universidad de Navarra with the aim of innovating new therapies for the benefit of personalized medicine for patients with liver disease.

To understand the cellular and molecular mechanisms causing liver failure and its potential progression to liver cancer.

To identify new therapeutic targets specific to hepatic pathology.

To develop hepatoprotective strategies that improve the prevention and treatment of major liver diseases.

To design new advanced gene and cell therapies.

Innovate in biotechnology products that can be transferred to clinical trials.

Our research programs and platforms
