CIMA at the University of Navarra has been accredited as a Severo Ochoa Center of Excellence, a distinction awarded to Spanish institutions that stand out internationally for the significance of their research results. With funding of nearly 6 million euros (4.5 million for strategic initiatives and 1.3 million for pre-doctoral staff), this accreditation will enable CIMA to promote the development of high-impact projects and attract top talent.
The Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Universities has granted this recognition following an independent evaluation process conducted by an international scientific committee composed of researchers of recognized prestige. The accreditation is valid for four years and, as stated in its call for applications, “provides social and scientific reputation and recognition, one million euros annually, and priority access to other initiatives aimed at promoting research.”
Recognition of Quality Research
“The Severo Ochoa accreditation is a significant milestone for our institution, as it places CIMA among the elite of biomedical research in our country. But above all, it is a true reflection of the work and dedication of all our professionals in sustaining a scientific project whose raison d’être is clear: to generate high-quality knowledge to improve people’s lives,” says José Andrés Gómez Cantero, Cima’s director general.
Gómez Cantero adds, “This recognition would not be possible without the University of Navarra and the Government of Navarra’s firm commitment to biomedical research and the close collaboration we maintain with the University of Navarra Clinic. The daily collaboration between research and clinical practice is one of the distinguishing features of our institution and one of our greatest strengths in translating scientific advances into patient care.”
Paloma Grau, Vice Rector for Research and Sustainability, noted that “for the university, CIMA’s accreditation as a Severo Ochoa Center of Excellence is a cause for celebration and joy. It represents recognition of the excellent research conducted at the center, the rigorous and dedicated work of all its professionals, and the support of so many people who, over the years, have placed their trust in the University of Navarra to continue advancing science and research. This accreditation reflects the high impact of our research and enhances our ability to train and attract talent.”
