Dr. Iñaki Eguren, specialist and researcher at the Cancer Center Clínica Universidad de Navarra (CCUN), has been awarded the most prestigious annual grant given by the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology (SEOM), which will enable him to spend two years at the Francis Crick Institute in London developing a research project on immunotherapy for kidney cancer.
The SEOM Research Fellowship at leading centers abroad is worth €72,000 and is intended to give a young researcher sufficient time to start and complete a clinical or clinical-translational research project.
Dr. Eguren points out that “immunotherapy is currently one of the first-line treatment options for patients with advanced kidney cancer. In this project, we will use tumor fragments obtained from patients to try to unravel the mechanisms of resistance to cancer immunotherapy.”
Dr. Eguren (Bergara, Gipuzkoa, 1990), a specialist in Medical Oncology, graduated in Medicine from the University of Navarra. He is a medical collaborator at the Clinic's Central Clinical Trials Unit and a researcher at Cima's Applied and Translational Onco-Immunology Group. In his opinion, “this grant demonstrates SEOM's commitment to supporting the research careers of physicians. It is a very important source of support for financing the professional development of physician-researchers, which is particularly complex.”
