Dr. Matías Ávila appointed co-editor-in-chief of the scientific journal 'Gut'

The principal investigator at Cima is the first Spanish researcher to hold this position

Dr. Matías Ávila is a principal investigator in the "Hepatology: Metabolism, Epigenetics, and Carcinogenesis Group" at Cima.

The scientific journal Gut has appointed Dr Matías Ávila, co-director of the Solid Tumors Program at Cima, University of Navarra, and member of CIBEREHD and IdiSNA, as a new co-editor-in-chief. The first Spanish researcher to hold this position, Dr Ávila will share this scientific activity for three years with Professors Thomas Rosch (University of Hamburg) and William Grady (Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Centre in Seattle, United States).

Gut is the official publication of the British Society of Gastroenterology. Founded in 1960, it is one of the leading international journals in the field of hepatology and gastroenterology.

Expert in liver research

Matías Ávila holds a PhD in Pharmacy from the Complutense University of Madrid. After completing postdoctoral studies at the Lombardi Cancer Centre at Georgetown University (Washington DC, USA), he joined the University of Navarra in 1997 and later Cima, where he has focused his research on translational hepatology.

An expert in liver diseases, his scientific activity focuses on studying the cellular and molecular mechanisms of the liver's response to acute injury and regeneration, as well as the progression of chronic liver disease. His laboratory is also committed to identifying new targets for cancer treatment and biomarkers for the early diagnosis of hepatobiliary neoplasms.
