Professional career

Graduated in Medicine from the Complutense University of Madrid (1983). PhD in Medicine from the University of Navarra (1994).

Specialist in Internal Medicine (1990).

Director of the Hepatology Unit in the Department of Internal Medicine at Clínica Universidad de Navarra.

RESEARCH AREAS

Principal Investigator of Group 6 at the Biomedical Research Network Center for Liver and Digestive Diseases (CIBERehd).

His translational and clinical research over the years has focused on innovations in the treatment of primary and secondary liver tumors and complications of cirrhosis. In particular, he has worked on developing a multidisciplinary liver cancer treatment program that incorporates innovations in surgery (expanded criteria for liver transplantation and resection in selected patients with portal hypertension), intra-arterial techniques (chemoembolization and radioembolization), and systemic treatment (advanced therapies such as immunotherapy and gene therapy).

Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Navarra.

In research

He has coauthored 20 chapters in specialist books, published more than 400 articles in national and international journals, and supervised 14 doctoral theses.
