Dr. Ignacio Melero, co-director of the Immunology and Immunotherapy Program at Cima and the Clínica Universidad de Navarra, has received an ERC Advanced Grant. This is one of the most prestigious grants from the European Research Council, which is part of the Horizon Europe program of the European Union and is endowed with 2.5 million euros.
Dr. Melero will coordinate a scientific cancer immunotherapy project based on messenger RNA, which will be integrated into the Cancer Center Clínica Universidad de Navarra. “Immunotherapy is achieving unprecedented effectiveness against various oncological diseases. This project aims to improve the performance of one type of cells (cDC1) in the microenvironment of tumor tissue. To do this, we will apply new therapeutic agents based on mRNA that will be administered both within the tumor and through the liver.”
255 grants to consolidated researchers
The researcher from Cima and the Clínica Universidad de Navarra is one of the 4 Spanish winners in the discipline of Life Sciences, for which more than 500 candidates applied. In total, the European Research Council has granted 255 grants, worth 652 million euros.
The “ERC Advanced Grants” call is intended for established researchers who have demonstrated significant achievements throughout their professional career. This is one of the most competitive grants in the European Union, and provides outstanding high-level researchers with the opportunity to carry out ambitious projects that could lead to important scientific advances.
